xcdroast on FC2 not recognizing external dvd-rw drive??

I am slowly learning about Linux and Fedora Core 2. I've installed xcdroast and it recognizes my internal dvd writer but It doesn't recognize an external dvd writer that I am trying to use. the external drive is recognized on another computer running redhat 7.2 and the same version of x-cd-roast 0.98alpha15. I am thouroughly confused and would like any suggestions.
I'm not sure what information you may need so please respond and let me know.

thanks
