xbacklight stopped working - Mint 18.1 Cinnamon

Hello, I'm on Mint 18.1 Cinnamon and I am having some issue with xbacklight. I used to be able to adjust my laptop's screen brightness using the commands
Code:
xbacklight -5
or
Code:
xbacklight +5
for example to adjust +/- 5%. Now those same commands don't work... I don't think I've changed anything since.

Any ideas where to look for more info? Where do I look for debug / verbose output?

Thanks

You can try 'dmesg' command.

dmesg doesn't record anything useful. No new debug info is posted to dmesg

i faintly, vaguely remember reading somewhere that "xbacklight is broken".
not sure if that is true, but you can always try light instead.

How is xbacklight broken though? It was just working recently and I haven't changed it.. shouldn't there be some debug output somewhere that would describe any errors which indicate that it is broken?
