xawtv and Creative pd0040 webcam

I have spent many hours trying to get creative pd0040 webcam up and going.
"xawtv -hwscan" produces
/dev/4l/video0 : ok [device /dev/v4l/video0]
type : v4l
name : ov518 usb camera
flags capture

"xawtv " produces a blank black window and the :Welcome" message and
text
" This is xawtv 3.85 running on linux /i686 (2.4.21-0.13mdk)
/dev/4l(video0(44l) : no overlay
v4l-conf has some trouble-trying to continue anyway
Xlib extension "Xfree-DRI"missing on display " 0 : 0

The camera appears to be loaded OK as the green led is on .

Can any one help please.

OS is Mnadrake 9.1.

I do not have a TV video card.

I want to use the camera for video chat and conferencing as I do with Windows XP. All works OK there.

Kez29.
