X11 - problems with keyboard (win-key etc.)

Hi All!

I'm running Gentoo Linux on laptop (Acer TravelMate 8000) and I have the following keyboard-related problems:

1. Any window manager except KDE doesn't recognize win-key.
2. X11 doesn't switch to console when I press [CTRL]+[ALT]+[F?]. KDE does this only.
3. Under X, [SHIFT]+[BACKSPACE], which normally adds caron to the next character pressed in some keyboards (e.g. Slovak or Czech), doesn't work.

It all worked fine on distros like Fedora Core, but it looks like Gentoo needs some special configuration for this.
I would appreciate some clue how to work it out.

Thanx in advance.

you should check your meta key mappings, what do you have in your xorg.conf
also something could be wrong with you ~/.Xmodmap file.
I think that KDE loads an alternative xmodmap in the init script

Thanks.

I tried to re-emerge xorg-x11 (6.8.2-r6), which replaced some configuration files.
I also removed the following line in my xorg.conf:
Option "XkbVariant" "nodeadkeys"

Now the console switching works fine and win-key is mapped to mod4.

BTW there was file named *modmap* neither in ~ nor in /etc.
Don't you have XFree86?

And how can I solve the problem with carons?

by caron you mean čšž?
Don't you have them on your keyboard?

Yes I do.
But there are some more that aren't on my keyboard. (e.g. D)

It works in xfce only.

Don't you know where else could I find this stuff (apart from ~/.Xmodmap)?
