X won't start and Xconfig hangs

Hi Everyone.

I was attempting to install mplayer on RH7.3 and somehow clobbered X. Now the monitor just does the click and flash.

Fortunately I can ssh into the box. I have attempted to simplify the /etc/X11/XF86config file to reduce any conflicts. But alas, still the old click and flash.

I'm hoping someone can point me toward a simple fix that'll let me use Xconfigure to restore this beast.

Thanks for any help. Sorry for the pittyful newbie question .

Regards,

Hi again everyone,

Ok. Now I'm really puzzled. Here's why. I ssh'ed into the box. I edited /etc/inittab and changed two things, the rc from 5 to 1 (single user) and X to once from respawn (I don't think this part mattered though).

I rebooted and without the click and flash I was able to use Xconfigurator and set X and test it just fine. The resolution was good and it looked fine. I reset the initlevel back to 5 and when I rebooted, back to the click and flash.

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Gidday ...

Have a look @ /var/log/XFree86.0.log and see if there's something
unusual first, and if so, post that? :)

Cheers,
Tink
