X with i810 driver crashes constantly

Hi
I'm using Mandriva Linux 2006.0 with kernel 2.6.12. I have an Intel graphics card using the default i810 driver that came with X.

My problem involves my X server constantly crashing whenever I run a program that uses OpenGL indefinitely. This includes things like Quake 3, GTK programs with OpenGL, etc. I can't track this down because X appears to crash randomly, and sometimes it doesn't crash at all until I rerun the program in question again. The worst part is that once X crashes, it enters an infinite loop where it tries to restart but crashes shortly afterwards. This forces me to power down my system manually, which really becomes tedious since I lose any data I was working with at the time, among other things.

This is strange because on my previous laptop, which had the same distro and kernel, yet an nVidia card with its appropriate drivers, I never experienced this issue. This is the first time I've had this sort of problem, and due to its nature, I'm not sure where to start looking.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: X

Could there be the possibility that there is a bug in the X server or the Kernel driver for the video card ??

Have you looked into upgrading the kernel and/or X Windows ?
