x-windows will not start

I am set to boot into runlevel 5, but when it tried to start x-windows, it fails. Here is the message I get:
execve failed for /etc/X11/x (errno 40)
giving up
No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to x server
No such process (errno 3): server error.
I have been booting into runlevel 5 every time I've restarted for the past month, but suddenly, now I get this error. I shutdown gracefully the last time x-windows started up fine, but now I cannot get it to work. I tried XF86Config to reconfigure, but when it gets to the point of testing x-windows, it fails and asks if I want to go back or quit.
If I cannot fix this, is there any way to just reinstall x-windows again without having to reinstall RedHat Enterprise Linux 2.1 WS? This is the version I keep having problems with.

Not that I know how to fix it
Just for future reference it's called: X11, not xwindows.
X11 is a windowing system for linux.. it's the most widespread, but there are others.

When you are trying to reconfigure using XF86Config (it may XF86Config-4)try to use the generic vesa drivers, and do not test your changes.

RE: X11 won't start

I will try reconfiguring with the generic VESA drivers. I didn't change any hardware in the machine before I couldn't get into X11. I DID do an update of a single package, though I don't remember the name. Where can I find out the dates of when I installed certain RedHat packages and errata so I can determine what I installed? If I can find out what it was, I'll uninstall it.
The one thing I hate about this though, is that Enterprise Linux 2.1 WS from RH is supposed to be rock solid. They shouldn't put out updates that crash the system!! I had RedHat 9 on here earlier and that was more stable than Enterprise Linux 2.1! I'll let you know what happens when I am done.

I ran Xconfigurator, let it detect my current ATI card and suddenly this time, it worked (unlike 2 days ago when I ran it). X now starts. This is very suspect. It seems the kernel randomly loses the driver for some reason. Oh well. I'll just keep going until the next time it happens.
