Unhappy X Will Not Start

Hey Folks,

I'm using SuSE 9.1 Pro and have never had a problem since using it. Today however I booted it up and it won't start X. It boots up reporting no problems and then tries to load X but I just get a black screen and the CPU does nothing.

Any tips on where to start looking for the problem?

I've got 9.2 Pro on disk. I've been meaning to upgrade for a while now - do you think If I upgraded the installation it would fix the problem?

Samba does not seem to working either......... I didnt think you needed X to run Samba? I restarted the service but Windows cannot see the drives

Please help - all my Uni work is on there!

Thanks for any help.

Hmm - did you change any hardware? Drop or otherwise disturb the system? It seems that X was working - if it now has STOPPED working, and you have not changed anything in the software, you most likely have a hardware problem. Maybe the display card is acting up.

As for Samba and X, they are (as far as I know) totally unrelated. If your hardware fault is such that the kernel in fact still runs, and you have SAmba configured and running, you should still be able to access all the shares you have defined on the system from another system running Windows.
