X Using 100% CPU

Starting today my system has started crawling and I found out that X is using 100% of the cpu. I restarted the box and I am getting the same thing. Can anyone point me to a solution? Or an idea of where to look in the logs for a clue?

You may have done this already but run "top" to see what is hogging bandwidth and kill it.

It is usually an instance of firefox or mplayer that isn't closed.

If it is X itself that is pulling 100% then post a few more details. How old of a machine are you using? What have you changed?

It is X itself taking up all of the cpu. I was using vnc and ssh to look at some php scripts I was creating, when vnc locked up. I went to ssh and found X at 99%. I rebooted the system and X was still at 99%. I've yet to figure out the problem.

The last piece of software I installed was kdebase, but that was yesterday. I run gnome 99.9% of the time. I don't see how it would mess up X randomly the next day. I did try removing it and restarting, but I've yet to see it boot back up.

My system is running on an Athlon XP 2800+ I think, 1 gig of ram, Geforce 4 card, about 400GB HD space. It's powerful enough.
