X uses an excessive amount of memory! ~80Mb

I recently installed Mandrake 9.1 on an old computer (266Mhz AMD-K6, 96Mb RAM, Voodoo Banshee, ~7GB HD).

I am running with the gdm display manager, on a gnome desktop. When I check my memory usage I see that X uses about 80 MB of RAM - Is this really how it's supposed to be?

I'm running on a 750Mhz Athlon, 640MB RAM Mandrake 9.1 station right now where X uses approx. 319 MB !!!

Hmmm, nothing seems to be wrong elsewhere... Just wondering.

Thanks, kamstrup

That seems high to me...but I am not sure why yours is doing such. I have redhat 8 on a p2 300 mhz and top shows only 16% of my 128 mb ram being used by X. Of course I am using Firebird/Sylpheed and XFce so they are considerably lighter than say Mozilla/Evolution and Gnome.

On my 640Mb machine I'm currently running Evolution, Nautilus and Galeon under gnome with gdm display manager. X uses approx 280MB. Is this because the entry for X in my system-monitor is the combined memory usage for everything running under X?
This doesn't seem to be the case for say Evolution which has several entries each with their own usage...

Still puzzled, kamstrup
