X under Gentoo, how?

I've installed from stage 3, and figured I'd get X and gnome, but all I get is the bash prompt. Tried using the startX command, but it won't work.

I'm not too sure about what went wrong, but here's the rundown on some of my configs:

1- Network and web access is A-1
2- Haven't Emerged Gnome or KDE, but i beleive they should be in the stage3 tarball, right?

3- My rc.conf file is set to use:

DISPLAYMANAGER="gdm"
XSESSION="Gnome"

If my rc.conf is correct, then I figure I might need to emerge Xfree, and Gnome

emrging gnome seems to be easy enough, but for the life of me, what is the keyword for Xfree?

Tried Xfree, Xfree86 , xfree, xfree86... to mno avail...

No there is nothing x at stage 3.If you do either emerge kde-base or emerge gnome or you favorite windowmanager it should pull everything needed.See the desktop configuration guide at gentoo,too.

ARGGH KDE won't emerge cause the FTP.UU.NET server doesn't seem to let emmerge the jpegsrc.v6b.tar.gz package... Dow¸nload never starts.... And Gnome won't either because I can't get fontconfig-2.2.1.tar.gz... It just aborts the whole thing..

Tried using the
mirrorselect -a -s4 -o >> /mnt/gentoo/etc/make.conf
command, to get more mirrors, but it seems not to be available on my setup... if I use the live CD, do I have to chroot to use it, and how do I make it available when booted back on my HD setup?

Not if you setup the bootloader and got stage3 installed.
If you didn't install the bootloader you'll have to chroot:

chroot /mnt/gentoo /bin/bash should be good enough from the live CD if I remember right.
Just do mirrorselect -a -s4 when you're in there.
First of all make sure that you don't try to install unstable - there are problems getting things downloaded there once in a while.
The line in /etc/make.config should look like this:

#ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86"

someone just gave me some nice and speedy mirror. I entered them manually in the make.conf file using nano, and all is running fine and dandy.

Thanx guys. =D
