Without going through step by step, the most usual cause is
1) Do you have the lines
Section "Files"
Fontpath "unix/:7100"
in your /etc/X11/XF86Config file?
2) If so, is xfs running when you start X? If it is not, then X will never start.
And why did you not post the last few lines of
/var/log/XFree86.0.log
to show the reason why X was not starting?
