X Server (xorg 6.8.2) restart problems

Running Mandriva 2005 LE with xorg 6.8.2. System either freezes or X server doesn't restart after repeated logouts with X restart. Help appreciated.
BTW, I would appreciate knowing how to restart KDE or Gnome and allow a different user to login without having to restart the X server. Is this possible?

If you are running kde or knome in the "start menu" or whatever the name in linux is, you click in Logout, then you pick "end session". That will take you to the login screen where you can relogin as anyone you want.

Logout restarts X

Thanks for the reply. We do exit KDE or Gnome via the logout on the menu. If we use GDM, it restarts the X server. If we ran from text mode, exiting brings us back to text mode and the next instance of startx restarts the X server (obviously). After doing either of these numerous times, X fails or the system freezes.
Is there a way to configure the menu so that logout restarts only KDE or Gnome with a login screen, but without restarting X. Has anyone seen this problem? Maybe there is a fix to the X restart problem.

Ok, when you boot your computer does it goes all the way to kde/gnome, or it stops in text mode?

If it stops in text mode it means that you are booting to runlevel 3, you have to change this to runlevel 4, so it will go to visual mode (start the x server) and load kde/gnome, then when you logout kde/gnome it will not go back to text mode, it will take you only to the login screen.

Check your inittab and look for this:
# Level to run in
id:2:initdefault:

where 2 is the default runlevel, confirm that 4 is for visual mode and that you are starting in runlevel 3, than change it.
