X Screen saver Password Doesn't work under Gnome 2.4

When I use Gnome 2.4 and I let the screen saver come up, X Screen Saver, the password box lets me type in anything to disable the screensaver. I can even hit the [Esc] key and it will exit the screen saver. I find this to be a big fault and a reason enough not to use Gnome. Could someone please tell me what is wrong?
