X problem with GridWars 2 from

I've downloaded the .deb package from for Grid Wars 2 and installed it on my Kubuntu 8.10 system without a hitch. When I run the app from the icon, I get an item in the taskbar for a bit, and then it disappears. When I start it manually, I get the following.

dpich@dpich-M70:~$ gridwars
X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes)
Major opcode of failed request: 160 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request: 5 (X_GLXMakeCurrent)
Serial number of failed request: 62
Current serial number in output stream: 62
Locking assertion failure. Backtrace:

The other strange thing is that the X session gets a little screwy. it's like my monitor has a resolution of 1280x1024 with a desktop of 1680x1050 (i.e. I'm able to scroll around and only able to see a percentage of the full desktop).

Could someone please help me with this X issue?
