X is very slow
Hello ,
I have a problem with X, everything runs fine on my machine except that scrolling is very slow in all my applications (mozilla, evolution, etc...). I mean it's incredibly slow whether I use the keyboard or the mouse to scroll. From the login prompt to mozilla, it takes time to display anything. I tried to reconfigure X but I still have the same problem I tested my drive speed with hdparm : no problem UDMA is enabled (17,82 Mo/sec) My video card is fully supported by Xfree .... I tried : -minimal theme under gnome -16bit colors instead of 24bit (the RAM is shared with the videocard) -I also tried to allow more memory usage for my video card in the xfree config file but same results.... so I can assure you it's a matter of configuration it's not because of low performances from the pc. (let's mention that gnome and X used to run really well before on other distros and same machine) I still don't know what to do, I 've tried many times to modify my xfree config and now I think it might be because of something else.. Do you know if there are other config options for xfree elsewhere than in the XF86config-4 file ??? Any help is appreciated Thanks for your help Debian-Sid GNOME 2.4 Toshiba 1800-712 Trident Cyberblade video card 256RAM 1,1 Ghz Celeron:Pengy: |
The video chip and the Celeron look pretty weak. What's your resolution and refresh rate?
|
1024x768 @ 60hz
yes they are weak but I can play DivX, play some 3d video games and so on it's supposed to be a lot better than the current situation : -In the past I used Mandrake and redhat on this machine and everything was fine I'm sure it's a matter of configuration |
Or it's a newer version of XFree86.
Have you tried a different windowing envrionment, like XFce? |
I have no idea what that graphics card is, but excluding that a 1.1ghz machine with 256mb should have no trouble with any standard linux environment. sorry I can't think what the trouble may be, but pretty sure it's not because your machine is lacking the hardware.
