x-free86 configuration

Hi everyone,

I am trying to configure the x-free86, on my newly installed debian OS, for the last 4 days but no result. I've read a lot of tutorials which suggest the same things. I have an Nvidia FX5200 and loaded the "nv" driver, specified the BUS, configured my monitors frequencies but kdm does not start! When I try to execute kdm my screen is flashing and my system remains on runlevel 2....

Do you have any idea what causes the problem?

Thanks

Run the command startx and post the error.

Suse has Sax2 to configure your X-server. Use this tool and then perhaps compile the nvidia driver and replace "nv" with "nvidia" in your xorg.conf

Sorry for the delay. The problem was the monitors frequencies. Now I came up with the following problems:

1) When I try to change from runlevel 5 to runlevel 2 or 3 (or the oposite) nothing happens. The only runlevels which work are 1 , 5 and 6 (I can restart).

2) ALSA can't find my usb-audio device (I have installed the module) Creative-Extigy. Though arts works...

3) When I try to mount my dvd device I get the following message:

mount: fs type udf not supported by kernel (do you know which module should I load? I am running the 1.4.** Kernel )

4) I tried to load a new $PATH to the bash .profile but doesn't seem to work. Do you know were can I find the profile?

Thanks for your reply and...

...sorry for the ammount of questions.... I didn't expect to be so many!!

1) In Debian runlevels 2-5 are user configurable. You may want to try the vesa driver to get X going. Use
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86
to configure.

3) What type of dvd are you trying to mount? Some you don't mount.

4) Put your PATH in ~/.bashrc in the form of
PATH=$PATH:/path_to_add

This adds path_to_add onto the end of your current PATH. After editing run
source ~/.bashrc

Thanks for your reply.

1) I am currently using the "nv" module. After changing to "vesa" are my graphic cards features going to work? Is there any help on how to configure inittab by hand to change the runlevel options?

3) It's a data dvd-rw created by k3b (under Suse 9.0) and used to work under linux. I noticed also that when I try to create link to my dvd-rw device I couldn't find the devive from the list of the drop-down menu....

4) Thanks. I didn't know that I should execute source ~/.bashrc to keep the new PATH... (though I had changed it directly by editing the /bashrc conf file.

1) I don't know. I don't use nividia.

To change runlevel options you have two choices. A turorial is can be found at
http://jamesallen.dyndns.org:3000/tu...artdebian.html

http://qref.sourceforge.net/Debian/r...en.html#s-boot
