X Error of failed request BadAccess (X_StoreColors)

Hi, Linux newbie here. I am trying to run an application that should open an X Window and display the graphical results of some calculations. I get "X error of failed request: BadAccess (attempt to access private resource denied). Major opcode of failed request: 89 (X_StoreColors)....

Not sure where to begin with this one. I am running RedHat Linux on a Dell Optiplex GX280 - it's a brand new build.

Any help much appreciated.
