X error I need to reinstall

I have an X error that just can't be fixed so I want to remove X and reinstall.

However apt cannot find the package to remove I have tried X11, Xorg, xorg, x-server and a few more but with no success.

Does anyone know what I can do to remove and reinstall X .

I'd use the "synaptic" package manager (or command line "aptitude") to see what packages are installed. None of those you specified are real package names in Debian (or Ubuntu). If you are really having problems with X (not with gnome, for example), then try searching (in synaptic or aptitude) for "x11". You could also use "apt-cache search pattern".

To fix X11 you should probably reinstall at least these packages (maybe some others also):

x-window-system
x-window-system-core
xserver-xorg
xserver-common
