X blank screen on start when network isn't connected (RedHat 9)

I a having a following problem.

When my computer is not connected to the network
XFree86 hangs on start with a blank screen
Ctrl-Alt-Fx doesn't respond as well

But when the network is connected there is no such problems.

I presume that it has something to do with name resolution,
however I checked that I have
localhost in the /etc/conf

I am using RedHat 9 with different kernels. The problem is not kernel related since I've checked it with 2.4.20,22 and 2.6.0

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance
Boris
