wvdial: modem not responding

this seems to be a common problem , though most seem to solve it half way through thread and leave without saying how

i have a smartlink installed, drivers installed and modprobed etc. and my wvdial.conf file configured. wvdial shows the following:

-->WvDial:internet dialer version 1.54.0
-->Warning: internet section [nameofmyISP] does not exist in wvdial.conf
-->Initializing modem
-->Sending:ATZ
-->Sending ATQ0
-->RE-Sending:ATZ
-->Modem not responding

the warning on the second line refers to 'Inherits = <nameofISP>' in my wvdial.conf file but i dont think this is causing the modem not to respond.
i have FC3

I also feel the problem, still now. I can give you my solution but do not know whether this non technical solution will help you at all or not, if you are using a base telephone set, just lift and keep the telephone from the cradel 3/4 times (means simply press and release the telephone switch) and it will start detecting your modem. This connects me well.

Looking for other's view why this happens?

lifting telephone

thanks ill try this, though it certainly doesnt seem like a "solution" solution, it may be a solution. yes, i would prefere a "solution" solution if it is possible to get one. (?)

i have tried the lifting-telephone solution and it didnt work for me. neither did disconnecting my telephone altogether. wvdialconf did not detect a modem but both lsusb and dmesg detected it.
also, lsmod shows the driver i installed but it doesnt say the modem is actually using it.

???
