wrong bash path for installed software

I previously compiled and installed ruby and irb to /usr/local/bin

Having now removed them I installed them using aptitude so that /usr/bin/irb works fine from the prompt, but if i just write irb it looks at the old paths

root@irvken:/home/sean# irb
bash: /usr/local/bin/irb: /usr/local/bin/ruby: bad interpreter: No such file or directory

How can I fix this?

whereis ruby
whereis irb
echo "$PATH"

and let us know the output.

root@irvken:/home/sean# whereis ruby
ruby: /usr/bin/ruby1.8 /usr/bin/ruby /usr/lib/ruby /usr/lib64/ruby /usr/share/man/man1/ruby.1.gz
root@irvken:/home/sean# whereis irb
irb: /usr/bin/irb /usr/bin/irb1.8 /usr/local/bin/irb /usr/share/man/man1/irb.1.gz
root@irvken:/home/sean# echo "$PATH"
