writing mathematical expression in a document

I want to write my mathematical expression in my project report. I used special characted given in openoffice in order to do it but it is so time consuming and very difficult to work with and not able to do everything. Is there any special program for writing such mathematical expressions? I used to write such expressions by mathcad but I don't have mathcad on my linux box.

OpenOffice has a built-im maths module. To insert a formula into a Writer document, select Insert>Object>Formula. You can also assign a keyboard shortcut to this.
