My workplace uses WPA wireless encryption, and I'm having trouble
accessing the network.
I'm told that the network uses WPA2-PSK with AES, and have
been given the network essid, as well as a passphrase.
I'm told that I have to create an entry in a file called
wpa_supplicant.conf, but am not sure what to write.

Can someone help me, since the techies are mostly unhelpful
douchebags?

Usually it's sufficient to run the following to setup wpa_supplicant.conf:

# wpa_passphrase theessid thepassphrase >> /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf

But, from there, it gets a bit more complicated, depending on which distro you have. But, essentially, you need to start wpa_supplicant as a daemon. This is the command I use, although I have it in my interfaces file so that it runs during startup.

# /sbin_wpa_supplicant -B -Dwext -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf -iwlan0

If you have network-manager installed, you might be able to connect through that, as well.
