WMV Video Converting

Not sure if this is the right place to post this, but Im looking for a piece of linux software to convert WMV files to other formats. perferably open source and that will run on the kde desktop. Im running Vector SOHO 5 and even though I have upgraded the video codecs Mplayer just will not run WMV files. Im not mad though, I dont care to use any M$ products anyway. Id rather convert them over to mpeg or avi..........etc

thanks guys........awsome forum!

Follow the instructions to install MPlayer and the codecs, they'll work. You have to install the codecs BEFORE you compile MPlayer. Then not only will MPlayer play .wmv files, but mencoder can encode them to other formats.

Edit: I think some of the best instructions I've seen to install mplayer are from the BLFS book, check em out here:

ok tell me this.........mplayer came default with soho already set up with the codecs in place. So maybe I could fix this? Ive compiled mplayer in fedora core and never had any problems. Now soho doesnt have the codecs file in /usr/local/lib/codecs because they are installed globally across the system to offer support for the other media players in the system.

Do you think that if I created that file and added the "essential Codecs" package Mplayer would begin to play these formats? Just a thought

95se.....thanks for the reply

That did it! Thanks for the help 98se. I just neede to add that file and now mplayer works perfectly with wmv
