Okay, first the less urgent problem (granted, neither are terribly urgent , Audacity and Avidemux say the can't detect a sound card/or something like that. What's important is that they can't play sounds. On Audacity, there are no options for the sound output.

Now, my real problem: I am trying to use Cinelerra to create a video out of several WMV clips. Problem: Cinelerra can't import/open WMV clips, is there a plugin for this? Also, I have mencoder and Avidemux installed. mencoder just makes my brain hurt, and lacks examples for WMV to MPG conversion (and my brain hurts too much to try it out). Avidemux has no export command, etc. So if I could be explained how to move from WMV to MPG using it, that would be greatly appreciated (provided, of course, that I can get the sound to work on it)

I'm running Ubuntu Feisty (7.04) on an HP a1630n (or similar). Does this help?

As for wmv->mpg (can't help you with sound, I'm kinda audiophob) I've done it couple times somewhere in the past with various results. But you can try following mencoder kung fu:
