WMV to AVI conversion

I posted in here but was advised to make myown post...

I tried looking for "Konvertor" but do not find it have tried the command line but it keeps on bitching about some crap and say I should try usong -help which I do and it bitches about it does not understand the command.

So... Does anyone have a URL to anything that is free that will convert wmv? H have no idea what the original specs for the file are which is something mencoder seems to bitch about.

And then this message is displayed in one of the outputs but none of the others

Quote:
DRM License URL: the_url_to_microsoft...
This file has been encumbered with DRM encryption, it will not play in MPlayer!
So what now?

Well I was playing with it more in the terminal and was trying to be clever and managed to get this output, if it means anything...

The video stream inside the video is encrypted. There isn't a way to play it using an OS player or possibly even any non MS player.
To decrypt the video stream entails contacting a key exchange server to obtain a key to decrypt the video stream. This happens behind the scenes in MS's player. Be aware that playing a video means contacting a server with your IP address, the name of the video, when you played it, and possibly other things as well.

Note: When you first run Microsofts player, you have the option to disable this being done automatically, but then even the MS player won't be able to the video if you don't connect with the media providers server.

If you can get the license (aka watch it in windows) just remove the drm so you can watch again in linux? I like the idea.

The problem - I do not have a windows machine anymore.

The Windows machine I was running (this machine) ate itself after 6 years of flawless operation I made the stupid assumption that it being a genuine install would be OK to update the service packs.

3 days later everything stops working, USB devices are no longer recognised and DVD rewriter is no longer recognised and the modem. The thing wans to connect to microsoft but I have no internet because something in the servoce pack has cocked up big time and when I boot the machine, I have the notice telling me that until the machine can connect to the internet, its not allowing me to use the operating system.

I stuff Linux on the machine and everything works.

So to resolve this problem, it needs to be a linux based one.

There's simply no way to just bypass that encryption, at least not in a legal way. You have to access the remote server to get a valid key to decrypt the media. Encryption can't be just ignored, the contents of the file is pure crap until you can decrypt it, and for that you need a valid key. As far as I know mplayer simply doesn't support DRM'ed codecs, and I wouldn't even use them anyway.

From now on, be vigilant about the stuff you buy. It's like buying a car without the key. The card is "yours", but you have to phone the vendor so he opens the door for you each time you want to use it. I have no idea why would anyone buy a car in such circumstances, but that's what they do with DRM'ed media.
