wmii error, 'fatal: couldn't open display'

Hey there!

I'm still quite young in my Linux experience, but after reading around I am certain that the window manager that interests me the most is wmii. I'm currently running Slack 12.1, and downloaded the files needed (dmenu, libixp and p9p) to my home directory. I read through the configuration files but felt that I did not find much that I felt comfortable editing.

So I did 'make' and 'make install', everything seemed to install peacefully, no error messages. However, when I try to run wmii, I now get the error message "wmii: fatal: couldn't open display". I've been googling the last few hours, without any luck, and for the first time so far I feel stuck. The only suggestions I found was switching user, which gave no difference.

Therefor, I would wish for your help with the problem. Where do I go next? Did I configure it wrong? (i.e. not at all)

All the best,
strain.

Wow, I guess it wasn't much of a problem other than my lack of knowledge. Thanks mate, I ran xinit and it worked perfectly!
