I use xsession: Create an .xsession file in your home directory (if not already present) and add some stuff to it:

wmcpuload -t -w &
wmnetload &
wmmemload &
exec windowmanager
The trailing ampersands ("&" characters) indicate the process should be started and then move on to the next. If you don't the launch items after won't ever get done (unless you kill the first process).
Finally, the exec line means "replace this script by running this application and terminate the X server when this process exits". It may sound a little weird but it works.

If you start X using startx from the shell this should work right away, but if you use GDM, KDM or XDM you will have to set the session type to Xsession at the login prompt.

For reference, here's my ~/.xsession:
wmdrawer &
wmcpuload &
wmmemload &
wmnetload &
wmapmload &
Eterm -F -windows-profontwindows-medium-r-normal-*-*-110-*-*-c-*-microsoft-cp1252 -g 80x32+519+0 &
Eterm -F -windows-profontwindows-medium-r-normal-*-*-110-*-*-c-*-microsoft-cp1252 &
exec /usr/local/bin/fluxbox
