Don't have anaswer for you, but can you please post hardware information about your lan? I am looking to go wireless and wanted to know what worked for you. Thanks.

Sure,

I have a DELL router any should work, when it comes to the card it depends if you want an PCMCIA for the laptop an Orinoco is a must silver or gold doesn't really matter. If however, you need it for the desktop PC with an antenna jack and working out of the box suse 9.1 - 9.2 VLOS 1.1 tested get SMC2802W V1. The v2 doesnt work so be carefull the V1 that you want has a red blue white metal plate over it and the V2 doesnt !

For me, running iwconfig with no arguments will show signal strength (granted, it's numeric, but that's actually more correct. on my windows box, my card's software tells me the signal strength is great, but windows tells me it's very low. Amusingly, windows is right.). iwconfig gives you both a rate (in MB/s), and a "quality" value. I'm using a Proxim Orinoco a/b/g combo PCI card, but I think iwconfig is pretty standard regardless of hardware.

cat /proc/net/wireless
What does it say? (output here)
There are a few things that could be considered in calculating the "quality". It just depends on how your software incorporates each.

Okey here is the output !

hackstacy@linux:~> cat /proc/net/wireless
Inter-| sta-| Quality | Discarded packets | Missed| WE
face | tus | link level noise | nwid crypt frag retry misc | beacon| 16
eth0: 0000 82 216 132 0 0 0 0 0 0

Well, it's showing your link quality there, so I don't know why the other tools shouldn't. Unless the ioctl call has changed in a recent version of wireless extensions, and the tools your using are just out of date.
