Wireless drivers, no windows drivers on machine

my laptop has a Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 wireless card. Everything I've been able to find has been ways to use the windows driver to get this to work (my understanding is that ndiswrapper translates the windows drivers for linux). However I don't have the driver on my computer (ubuntu 8.04 was installed because of multiple hard drive crashes and no easy access to a windows boot disk...and cause I wanted to). how can I get this driver? Or is there a native driver (I seem to remember seeing mention of one but can't find it again)

Another option I have is a linksys wusb54gc wireless adapter. I have downloaded the rt73 driver, however it crashes at at ===================
Load the driver:

$ modprobe rt73 [ifname=<name>] [debug=<mask>] [firmName=<file>]

this point in the read me file (several bugs and then terminates the file. Does anyone have experience with this?

In order to get the Broadcom chip to work, you need to install and enable the b43-fwcutter package. Instructions for this can be found at

Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more help.

Perhaps less interesting, but Broadcom seems to have (closed) Linux drivers as well: (I would still try the b43 one first though)
