Winzip 7, linux unzip error ~central directory not found

In Windows XP, winzip 7 I create,

ftp get it from linux.

unzip -r works fine.

But if I try same with a directory say www to

unzip -r

error missing ---- bytes in zipfile
start of central directory not found

A) Why
B) Is there a better way, ie. in general what is easiest / cheapest way to zip/unzip transfer files between Windows and Linux?

I am assuming you are talking about 1 machine not 2 since you are ftp'ing the files. I would set up a small fat32 partition and put the files I want for linux there and then boot into linux and mount the partition and grab 'em. If it is 2 machines set up a samba server on the linux machine. As far as zipping and unzipping across platforms - I have no clue...never really needed that
