WineX how to's

In talking to other linux newbies I have heard about wine and its abilities to run MS programs?

Where can I find inst. to execute a program and how to load it into the directory on a linux OS. Then how to I would guess from the command line run it.

Any help or links would be appreciated.

You could check on www.winehq.com for Howto's. But basicly all you have to do is install it, and then in the command line type:

wine install.exe ( if the installers name is install.exe otherwise replace by the other name).

same goes for starting a program:

wine start.exe (same goes here).

wineX how to's

Puntjuh;

Thank you for the reply.
I am currently running windowsxp sp2 and use a product called VMware so that I can run other OS's
I currently running Suse 10.2
I did add wine to my system.
I am looking for the steps for I guess to complile the program
and then to run an application such as onetouch which is a diabetes tracking program. also would like to see if Quicken would run.
I did find a forum that I would like to join but get sort of scared when registering with google and not having my address shared with who knows where.

I am searching for a manual perhaps?

thanks Larry.

When u have installed wine using YaST, you no longer need to compile anything.

You can just start installing any windows application u like using my previous post.

QUICKEN HERE

This is also an interesting site concerning wine and howto's:

Franks Corner

If i we're you, i'd open up a konsole and type : wine -v
It should output the version of wine installed.

Now when that's done, try installing Quicken/Onetouch. It should work.

Thanks Puntjuh;
I saw on a forum to run winecfg so I did and got this

larry@linux-wer5:~> su
Password:
linux-wer5:/home/larry # winecfg
wine: creating configuration directory '/root/.wine'...
Failed to open the service control manager.
wine: '/root/.wine' created successfully.
err:winecfg:load_drives GetVolumeInformation() for 'A:\' failed, setting
serial to 0
linux-wer5:/home/larry #

I know enough to install the source by adding programs.
That's how I know wine 0.9.24.15 is out there. and I guess there are later versions.

I did try a terminal window and
did yast install wine but I don't think that my system is sound.
I am waiting for a bittorrent to complete so I have the system to just the bringing up of the Suse system.

I am saving all of your help so that I will have a reference in the future.

Larry.

Things got bad and I had to re install Suse.
but I did get wine installed!
then ran winecfg and got the box to set various parameters.
did see how in drives that you can see all the files and folders on drive c on the windowsXP system which is the host machine that I am running vmware on. bad part is that vmware is a test program that is in RC2 stage and I am a beta tester.
thanks again for all the help.
will follow some of your links and Franks Corner I had found that one before you sent me the mail.

Larry.
