WineX and Arts.

How can I have it use the ARTS plugin to play sounds in games? Arts always seems to work best for me. Thanks.

Go into ~/.wine/config (the dot means that the folder is hidden, so turn on "Show Hidden Files" in your file manager to see it), and look for this section:
Quote:
[WinMM]
; Uncomment the "Drivers" line matching your sound setting.

;"Drivers" = "wineoss.drv" ; default for most common configurations
;"Drivers" = "winearts.drv" ; for KDE
"Drivers" = "winealsa.drv" ; for ALSA users
;"Drivers" = "winejack.drv" ; for Jack sound server
;"Drivers" = "winenas.drv" ; for NAS sound system
;"Drivers" = "wineaudioio.drv" ; for Solaris machines
;"Drivers" = "" ; to disable sound
"WaveMapper" = "msacm.drv"
"MidiMapper" = "midimap.drv"
As instructed, uncomment winearts.drv, and re-comment whatever is currently being used (most likely wineoss.drv).

That should do it.

I don't really see where the arts plugin is..I don't think it's even in the file.

Did you compile Wine yourself? Without aRTs support? As far as I know, the binaries available from the WineHQ download page normally include such support, for ALSA and aRTs at the very least.

I'm sorry to say that I have no idea how to compile WINE with support for additional sound protocols, unless there's a --with-arts flag or something (which there might well be), but if you don't know either, I would suggest reading the README in the source package.

Otherwise, you might want to make uninstall any source you installed and install a binary for your distribution (whatever that may be, as you have not filled in that section of your profile-- please do so).

afaik winearts driver doesn't provide any sound because it's only to 6% or somewhat complete, according to wine api stats. And I wouldn't use arts as sound server because 1) your latency will be normally worse and 2) it eats your worthful ram and cpu time. I personally don't use sound servers anymore. If you want multiple programs to play sounds at one time, try - either "hw:0,1" output or dmix plugin.
