Wine with Internet Explorer
 

Hello,

I was wondering if anyone here has tried to use wine to run Internet Explorer on Linux. I do development and I want to be able to test in IE without having to go to a windows machine. I have wine installed but when I tried to install IE it wouldn't work. Would it be better to use my windows partition instead?

may be difficult sine IE is a very integral part of windows. Its not just a standalone browser like Netscape Navigator. It was one of the reasons why there is an anti-trust trial against them. Because IE is so viscioualy attached to windows itself, there were a lot of areas where it performed better because it was working closer with windows. Windows would prefer it over other browsers and it would (apparently) use "secret" api's that were faster than ones publicly documented for other projects.

You may need to google or have a look on the wine website to see if they support IE.

What sort of development are you doing?

<evangelism> Basically, stuff IE coz it sucks. Use a standards compliant browser that will show pages the way they are suppsoed to be shown that everyone can use</evangelism>

I have to agree: if we continue to code non-compliant html so that it looks good in IE then microsoft will never bother to implement the standards.

If enough people complain that standards-compliant code looks bad/broken in IE then they just might.

Of course if your doing work for a customer you may not have this luxury.

as webtoe said....the IE code is so tightly wrapped with the OS I don't think you will get it working under wine.

Yes, I use it in Wine every day. It can be hard to get running well though. This is one of the few things where I've actually found it damn near impossible to get going under WineHQ but works like a dream in CrossOver. I would *strongly* recommend CX Office if you want to use IE

Thanks for everyones help. I tried installing ie after I downloaded the ie6setup.exe. The installer went through it all but at the end it gave me a list of things that didn't install....basically everything! So I will give that Codeweavers Crossover Office Utility a go.

As for the IE bashing:

I tend to agree. I use Mozilla on Linux, but then I mostly use it because of the tabbed browsing. I think all the browsers have problems. IE also has some things that the other browsers can't do, not that it is my favorite browser I am just being open minded.

However, I am working for a company and when I first got here they were tyring to get me to write code for both Netscape 4 and IE 4++! I told them some things just won't work on Netscape 4 and especially the early IEs, so I am just glad that I was able to convince them to use the latest IE, at least I can do most things they want on that. I develop a web application so we now who our customers are. I pity people who still develop for the real internet....I always hated how stuff I would write would look great in my browser by look really bad in others!

After saying all this, I make sure it works in Mozzila and hence Netscape since that is what I work in. But I am getting tired of booting up other computers just to make sure one little thing I did works in IE. Or tyring to use someone else's computer in the office to check. I work in a windows office. I don't want to have to leave Linux all day....that is my dream. Anyway, I got off topic a little here.

Yeah, I tried to follow the instructions but it just didn't seem to work, plus I don't totally understand what the instructions mean? I downloaded the ie6setup.exe and ran it but it always dies in the end. Then I try to run the ie I have installed on my mounted Windows partition and that doesn't work??

I agree about coding for the standards. But there is one thing you have to remember i.e. is not made for the standards and from my server stats (100,000 hits a day) about 90% of my traffic is from i.e. So to not test in i.e. has the possibilty of not formatting correctly on 90% of your users.

I wish everyone would go to a better browser mozilla for example but until then it looks like you will be booting up a windows machine :-(
