wine window error

I have wine (20041019) compiled & running (well, was running) on Mandrake
9.2
This is a test machine, only thing lost for a complete reinstall is time.

Got the fonts working, and a few trivial applications and games to make sure
sound & video were ok.

Installed winmx2.6 ( really old one). It installed ok, but caused major
display problms in kde. Ran fine in IceWM, but of course could not find any
servers. Is this kind of display inconsistency normal?
There was an install issue, in that the install program would not let me
type in directory names, it would only let me choose existing directories.
No real problem I just created them first. Is this a winmx problem, or is it
common?

Installed winmx3.10 - this one hung part way through - it didn't like an
existing non default directory. The dialogue boxes would not clear, so I
restarted the x server. I retried the install but it failed as well.

Now, no applications will run - I get
X Error of failed request Badwindow (invalid window parameter)
Major opcode of failed request 15 (X_QueryTree)
Resource id in failed request 0x1600235

Questions
Is this error local to wine, or have I messed up the X server?
Is there a configuration fix, or is it better to re-do the 'make install'
or re-do the 'wineinstall'

Stuart
