Wine/Starcraft Problem
 

I recently installed Starcrfat and Brood War onto my computer, and it worked fine, with not difficulties at all. I can play the game and everything with no trouble, however, when I try to play online, using Battle.net the various servers don't show up, and If I click the available [ok] all I get is a black screen that doesn't respond, and I have to kill it. Anyone know how I can fix this?

Try using Cedega in stead of Wine. It's a mod of wine made specifically for gaming. Search for it on torrentspy.com.

I've actually tried it with cedega, I use that for counter-strike. But whenever I try to install with cedega I get terminated on WineDBG pid 1, and whenever I try to play with the starcraft I already installed with wine, I get terminated on WineDBG on pid 3. Cedega I'm using is a 4.2.1, but I had to tweak it a little to get it to install on my system, i've also read a number of places that starcraft works just fine with the newer version of wine.

Hi. I am a big fan of the best game ever, Starcraft, and I have exactly the same problems you mention. Never use Cedega for Starcraft, for me it simply hangs at startup when I had 1.11b version and with the rest of versions hangs when trying to play battle.net, so use Wine. To play on Battle.net I use hotkeys for Join, Create, Quit and so on and whenever I want to refresh the screen I switch displays with CTRL+F6 or CTRL+F7 (I play Starcraft on another display to avoid some problems, there was a thread about that in this site). Anyway, my main problem is that it works rather slow, playable but enough to make my skills slightly but appreciably decrease, although I have a AMD Athlon 2200+ with 768 MB of RAM and NVIDIA graphics driver. Does it run at perfect speed when you play? (remember to set speed to Fastest, no one plays slower than that, of course...)

It runs at full speed, when I play, so you also can't see the battle.net servers? I managed to get a screen saying connecting to fastests battle.net servers, but it just sits there and then I kill it, and in the process X gets really wacked out. If I let it sit will it eventually connect to someting? Also, cedega apparently supports from version 4.1+ starcraft and broodwar officially, so its kind of wierd. I've had a lot of trouble with cedega, it dies trying to install several games that should be supported by the version I have, maybe because I had to --nodeps the rpm to get it to install.

Well, my sole problem is that battle.net's graphics don't display well (some of them) and that it runs slightly slower. What is your PC configuration? So I can compare with mine to try to solve the speed problem. Anyway, the game is fully functional at every other aspect.

My comp is a dell 4600c 3.0 ghz 512mb ram GeForce4 card with the nvidia driver. I have no speed problems at all. For some reason though, the multiplayer just doesn't work. I can't get ipx lan connections or direct ip's either. Out of curiousity, which version of wine do you use. I use 2005.... someodd, perhaps it broke. I know its not the network I'm on because the battle.net server addresses are hardcoded into the game, so..., As for your bad fps, I have found that the vanilla kernel sometimes has trouble keeping up fps in games. I have used the gentoo's default patchset and mm's patchset, and both have provided very high fps.

Well, i managed to get StarCraft working with Cedega, exact same problem, which I find very odd.

Cedega costs money and WINE works perfectly with Starcraft. The only problem you will have is patching through battlenet, so you have to resort to downloading the patch from Blizzard's site. Though, the patch version 1.12b works perfectly.

I ran Starcraft on a Athlon 700 MHz with little decrease in speed which is reasonable because WINE is a software emulator. I made an image of the CD, so the game instantly loads during a game. Usually, I have to wait for the idiotes that can not do the same.

Battlenet and WINE is a little screwd up (just the graphics) but you should be able to see the text like join, quit, create. If you want Starcraft to 100% to work, try VMware.

If you are having trouble, than something is wrong with your setup. I do nothing special to install and run Starcraft, but I can not say the same for installing and running Microsoft Office 2000. I had to use winetools to get Microsoft Office 2000 installed and running. You can try using winetools.

To get IPX or LAN, in Linux you have to load an IPX module. Though I have not experiment on configuring WINE and LINUX for IPX.

I will attempt to patch manually then, and hope that fixes the battle.net server issue.

I can now see the battle.net servers to join, but sc hangs on Accessing Account, I let it sit, and came back two hours later and it was still there. But at least progress has been made

Electro, have you tried Starcraft with VMware's Workstation? Does it run faster (with the VMtools installed) than with Wine?

I'm just gonna through it out there, I also got wine working with cedega, it works, and from what little of battle.net I have been able to get to, you can see the graphics, fonts just have wierd shadows thats all.

As far as I know broodwars is not officially supported by cedega. They say taht if you can get it to work then great but they don't support it.
