Wine Problem: Winecfg can't create directories

I installed wine version 0.9.24 and winetools on my computer (OpenSuse 10.2) but I can't get it to configure at all. I first tried winetools and it said that I didn't have a configuration so run with the command wt. So I typed wt and nothing happened. Heres where I think the main problem lies though.

When I attempt to do winecfg I get a ton of errors. Here is the output:

joshua@linux:~> winecfg
wine: creating configuration directory '/home/joshua/.wine'...
Failed to open the service control manager.
wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x00000000 at address 0x7cacbafd (thread 0009), starting debugger...

wineserver: could not save registry branch to /home/joshua/.wine-fGht5B/user.reg : No such file or directory

Its a mess!

Your help is much appreciated!!

wine: creating configuration directory '/home/joshua/.wine'...
Failed to open the service control manager.

Check that /home/joshua/.wine exists. If not, create it.
Does wine have permission to access it?

I've stopped using wine - by the time I got anything I needed working in wine, a linux version would appear.

How did you do this install?
I see you have installed 0.9.24 on OpenSUSE 10.2? Looking at the official builds, I see the latest wine is 0.9.27 ... 0.9.24 is there, but no rpm for SUSE 10.2 (only 10.1 and previous).

I've gone through all of this to no avail before this post. I created the directory and even did chmod 777 to the directory and all its contents and it still is being a pest.

As for a linux port of Multisim and Powertab coming out before my next semester starts, I doubt it. I have to get this to work or I'm gonna have to put the stupid thing on the winders partition.

I did many installations and each one didn't work. I started out with the wine and winetools that came on the 10.2 dvd. Then I removed that completely and downloaded the 0.9.27 rpm that is available at winehq for 10.2. After that I downloaded the source for 0.9.28 and used checkinstall to create an rpm and installed it. All of them came up to the same error.

Here... I'll show you what happens AFTER I create the directory and chmod 777.

The winecfg window actually opens up but each time I try to do something I get errors in the terminal.
Here is the initial warnings and what happens when I try to set up Drives using Autodetect:

joshua@linux:~> winecfg
Warning: the specified Windows directory L"c:\\windows" is not accessible.
Warning: the specified System directory L"c:\\windows\\system32" is not accessible.
Warning: could not find DOS drive for current working directory '/home/joshua', starting in the Windows directory.

/* Setting up Drives here: */

err:winecfg:apply_drive_changes unable to define devicename of 'D:', targetpath of '/home'

err:winecfg:apply_drive_changes unable to define devicename of 'G:', targetpath of '/proc/bus/usb'
err:winecfg:apply_drive_changes unable to define devicename of 'H:', targetpath of '/home/joshua'

I hope that helps...
Thanks!

I have seen nobody with a direct fix for this.

If the windows applications are so critical, you may find yourself changing distro to get wine running or running a windows VM under qemu or xen. (qemu seems to have been the workaround of choice for most folk with this problem.)

Ubuntu - you can install and setup wine via aptitude.
Fedora Core - ditto, only with YUM.

Have you tried installing the source? Disabling SELinux?

I haven't found this in the winehq wiki, the faq, or the online documentation.
You could try putting the question to the community - ar the winehq forums.

As for those critical apps:
Multisim: this is a circuit analizer/builder. There are many linux versions.
Powertab: see PowerTab tool for linux... while you cannot get powertab for linux, you can get a set of tools which can convert the files for use with GNU LilyPond.

Tertiary educators are usually amenable to OSS/FS alternatives, talk to the lecturer. If this is a high-school though, then it is harder. Still dosn't hurt to ask.

The trick is to already have a few OSS/FS alternatives at your fingertips and ask for advise about which the teacher/lecturer prefers. Make sure they are as like the standard course requirement as possible. Point out you do not have the funds for a windows license.

Worst case, you will need to convert supplied formats to something linux-freindly, do the work in linux, convert the resulting file back.

Ok strange stuff. I don't see the logic to it but here it goes:

What I did was reinstalled wine and winetools from the repo I had. Its wine 0.9.24, old but I don't mind right now. So I reinstalled that and winetools. Ran winetools and did the basic setup. It said that the fake windows directory was not created... but it was.

I then did winecfg and that worked fine.

Who knows! I just gotta see if I can the programs to work now.
Thanks for everyones suggestions. I just wish I knew what happened there...

I guess it was just a temporary victory... Anything I tried to do with winetools failed. I tried to install the windows installer and dcom98 and such... No luck. Then I saw that wine 0.9.28 was released so I tried doing that but I still get the same error. I have never had that happen to me before!

Oh and I looked around for a multisim alternative... The one that came up a ton was gEDA... but it just didn't seem like a great choice to me. Ktechlab looked cool but it doesn't seem to be an alive project anymore. I just opted to install multisim on my windows partition for now.

I hope this problem with wine gets solved!

Won't happen unless someone reports it to the developers... hint hint.

There's also gnucap and oregano... also popular.
