wine + MSO 97 + SUSE 9.1 Pro: font problems

System:
Flavor: SUSE 9.1 Professional (fully updated)
Video drivers: Generic VESA 1024x768x16 @ 75Hz, KDE 3.2
Video chipset: [on-board] Intel I815 (i810)
WINE version: 20040213 (from pre-compiled SUSE RPM)
Font aliasing enabled in KDE Control Panel. No subpixel hinting or excluded range settings enabled.

Setup:
My boss wants to deploy Linux workstations loaded with SUSE 9.1 Pro across the
entire business. We'll be setting up some 50+ machines with identical hardware,
probably do a HDD image, &c. He wants MS Office 97 running under wine, though,
for compatibility reasons. (Upon proselytizing him in the way of OOo, I found
out that he already favors it over MS anyway, but can't switch because the higher-ups
aren't willing to commit yet.)

Problem:
Wine installs great, and so does MSO97. (For future reference, if anyone is
using this, make sure Setup doesn't install the Office Assistant--they'll slow
your windowing system down to a crawl.) Running WINWORD.EXE through wine is
flawless, pretty quick, no problem. But then when I start typing to test out
the interface, it's apparent immediately that something is wrong with the fonts.
The first line of text--regardless of the kind of font, everything from Times
New Roman to Tahoma--is fuzzy, very blurred out and almost clipped where the
serifs are. (For instance, the tops of capital letters are truncated and that sort of thing.) Then, when I hit Enter to go to the next line, then
start typing, *nothing* shows up at all. If need be I can take a screenshot.

Any ideas? Note that I've tried disabling font anti-aliasing for KDE to no avail. Thanks for your time.
