Wine Help - Starting A Program
Alright so, I just installed the latest versions of wine and wine-devel. I went to Konsole and did:
wine program.exe and it told me that program.exe was not there or something. I'm a total newb when it comes to Wine, so I have a few questions. 1. When wanting to start a DOWNLOADED windows program, what command should you type? 2. What command do you type to install/start a program on cd? 3. What are some basic commands I should know? I went to all the well-known wine websites already but they give explanations that are too broad. Can someone plz answer my questions? |
1. wine "location of executable"
ex. wine /home/nrunge/downloads/strippoker.exe 2. same deal only for the cd rom location ex. wine /mnt/cdrom/strippoker.exe 3. man wine will give you the switches and explanations for them I have never had tons of luck with WIne, some people do but you have to play around with it a bit. Whenever I used Wine I would just google for whatever program I was trying to run. But to be perfectly honest if you want to play games just buy WineX (its cheap), the folks at Transgaming have made a hell of a product and when you are a registered user the support forums are great. If you want to run applications just use Crossover Office. I use Crossover to run Dreamweaver and Photoshop and they work well (minor glitches) and I have used WineX for Baldurs Gate, Warcraft III, Diablo II and Medal of Honor Allied Assult. |
Well, I have wine, and EXE's and such just work by being double clicked. So go for that.
I don't use it though because it never opend anything for me other than polaris, and it didn't even work right. I say if you're on Linux use Linux appz. If you're on Windows... |
i'm one of those who has had incredible success with wine (the regular one from www.winehq.com)
first of all, what program are you trying to run? are you sure that you have rights to that program (chmod 777 program.exe) and that you are preferably running the program off a cd or from your home dir? also, have you tried winemine and wine notepad? make sure your config file is setup properly for more specific, post that actual errors and tell us how "complex" the program is |
Well, I don't have a specific program in mind...but how about Paint Shop Pro 7, for example.
|
definitely one of the more "complex" programs (because of all the different libraries it uses itself, including dll's and dependency on specific windows components) but if paintshop pro 8 has been reported to work, then 7 shouldn't be too bad
yikes: take a look at how to get psp 8 running: http://frankscorner.org/modules.php?...tid=109&page=1 it may not be so bad for 7, you may want to check here: http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?...versionId=1405 though it is necessary to inform that the latest versions of wine have begun to lack support for things like photoshop, so you may need to use an older version of wine to get that specific program running |
Paint shop pro runs with wine? Has Photoshop ever been reported to work? If I could get Photoshop on Linux I'd NEVER concider touching Windows again. (I would also say fuck it to what I said before, and use wine and love it)
