Wine - emulated program conflicts?

Here's my dilema:

A program I need to run (Steam) needs Internet Explorer to function. Whenever I attempt to run Steam wihout internet explorer running, it freezes on the "Start automatically when game is downloaded" screen (assumably because the inbedded internet explorer section for the updates). When I try to run Internet Explorer at the same as Steam, though, they both freeze and have to be xkilled.

Soooo, here's my dilemma. (I didn't post this in the games section because I think it's a conflict with IE.

Is this fixable by repairing IE somehow, or do I need to go into WINDOWS (ahhh!!! oh nooo!!!) to use the Steam client with games.

I think this lies within a problem that Steam is trying to access functions in IE that it can't, so it freaks out and freezes.

OW! Help please!

Okay, well in one of my more "successful" attempts, I've gotten Steam to look correctly (buttons, etc). Yet, when I try to connect with a logon, the console outputs:

fixme:crypt:CryptAcquireContextA Did not find registry entry of crypto provider for "Software\\Microsoft\\Cryptography\\Defaults\\Provider Types\\Type 001".
fixme:crypt:CryptAcquireContextA Did not find registry entry of crypto provider for "Software\\Microsoft\\Cryptography\\Defaults\\Provider Types\\Type 001".

...and Steam says it cannot connect to the Steam network.

I had remedied this once by somehow managing to install IE 6 correctly, but now I cannot.

I also has to paste and rename comctl32.dll and commctrl.dll to lowercase for Steam to recognize them.
