wine cant open a window

Today i wanted to install a windows application with wine, did it before so cant be hard, i thought.
I was wrong...

Last time I installed Wine on ubuntu i just used synaptic (worked with winamp) this time i wanted to optimize it for World of Warcraft. So i used the following guide:

winehq.org/appview.php?versionId=4031

Compiled wine and put in the cd, and run the wine command. Didn't launch. Maybe theres something wrong with the disk so i tried to launch Msn messenger setup as a test, also a failure.
Here is what i get:

*******@*******Ubuntu:~/downloads$ wine Install_MSN_Messenger
fixme:advapiecryptFileA "C:\\windows\\temp\\IXP000.TMP\\" 00000000
Application tries to create a window, but no driver could be loaded.
Make sure that your X server is running and that $DISPLAY is set correctly.

I really dont have a clue whats happening, and google wouldn't help me either. So id be glad if someone could tell me how to fix it or how to completely remove the compiled wine (since it cant be done using synaptic, and i can't delete form the folder)

Before i forget: Ubuntu 5.10 & Wine 0.9.11

Hope im not the only one with this problem

Thanks in advance

no not as root.
i managed to delete the compiled package as root user, and re-installed 'wine' with Synaptic, now it works, well allmost.

In order to get the game running like it should, i have to compile again. So i hope people still can tell me where this error messages comes from.
