wine builds all result in--could not load kernel32.dll


i have built several different versions of wine, but trying to run anything with it returns,
Code:
winecfg
wine: could not load kernel32.dll, status c000007b

Could it be that you are using a 64bit system without multilib support and trying to run a 32bit version of Wine?
If that's the case try wine 64bit.
