Wine

Hey guys,
Ok so I have OpenSUSE 12.2 up and running and I'm trying to install a windows program with wine and it keeps failing. Part way through the installation, I get a force close saying that the program experienced a problem and needs to close. I went to the wine database and searched for and installed a more stable version of the program and got the same error and this is the log that I get from it.

Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0xffffffff in 32-bit code (0x7c55cdd5).

So if anyone can make sense of this for me and tell me what I need to do to fix it?
Thanks for any help I receive in advance.

It looks like it reached for 0xffffffff but there was nothing there.

The bit before the section you gave would be interesting. Did it install ok? There are a pack of winedebug symbols for the $WINEDEBUG variable
http://www.winehq.org/site/docs/wineusr-guide/x543

and you can try one or two of those at a time this way

WINEDEBUG=heap, ntdll, msi wine Your_Program >some.file 2>&1 and pastebin that

If it's 20 Megs don't pastebin it! (I got some over 2 gigs!)

Hey thanks alot for the response business_kid, but I gotta say...I'm a linux newbie and have no idea what you are talking about with that. I'm going to the link you gave to see if they have a fix for it.
If you can go into a little better detail for me, I'd appreciate it.

Wine

Ok, so I did the winedebug and this is the output. I put it in my dropbox folder so you can just click the link.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/p7o4kzcjtd...Log.odt.tar.gz

business_kid 09-15-2012 03:32 AM

It just seemed to pick up heap, and I don't see an error in that.
Let's just start with a full output of
wine Your_Program > some_log 2>&1

BTW, what is the windows program? It looks like InstallMVU. What's MVU?

have you got the winetricks script?

To upload it, just run
gzip some_log
and it's zipped into some_log.gz. Don't need to make an ODT or a tar from a single file.
with an install program the test to run is

WINEDEBUG=+msi wine your-program > next.log 2>&1

The outputs from a program are classified by number. Catching 1 is status messages, 2 is errors (I think) so 2>&1 gets both.

Does this un-named windows program have reports of working in wine?

business_kid 09-16-2012 03:14 AM

our OP has gone silent, but it does. It's version sensitive, to judge by a quick google on winehq.org

John VV 09-16-2012 01:29 PM

mvu ?????
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManage...estingId=30717
if so there ARE Linux native im clients

http://www.imvu.com/
my daughter ( when she was 12 ) would have liked that

jefro 09-16-2012 02:32 PM

If he is trying to get that to work, there is a lot of torrents for some reason that host that file. I never trust those files.

business_kid 09-16-2012 05:04 PM

Perhaps the OP is in hiding because we found out when he's working hard to install :-)).

Nice one guys....
No I'm not in hiding, I just had some other stuff to take care of since I posted this yesterday.
Thanks for noticing.

John VV 09-16-2012 06:52 PM

so are you just need to install any IM client ?
or is this one THE ONLY OPTION

DavidMcCann 09-17-2012 11:36 AM

Personally, I think if something won't install or run under Wine, you've got to just accept it. A lot of software is sensitive, and you just have to try a different version. My one must-have program has been tested on 16 versions of Wine and works on 5 of them. Luckily Wine HQ has a massive selection to try!

CellBlock420 09-19-2012 07:46 AM

Ok thanks guys. Yeah it's a chat client that me and my wife use to talk to friends around the world, it's just fun. There are versions of it at winehq that supposedly work for linux but I have yet to find one that works for my particular box. Oh well, I'll figure it out eventually.

business_kid 09-19-2012 08:01 AM

You're still on the install, right? I gather you're quietly sneaking off to m$ until you get this sorted. There's a whole lot can be done when programs don't work.

wine your_program > file 2&>1

and let's see the lot in pastebin. Sometimes wine just needs some libs, or fonts.
