Windows on Linux

Hello,

I'm using Debian Sid and need to run an application (Methasoft) that is only ported to Windows. Wine is a good application but I've been told that it has problems with this particular app. Of course there are proprietary apps like Win4Lin but I've also heard about a way to virtualize the Windows OS on linux (enabling certain kernel modules?). I don't remember the details on this and am hoping that someone can point me in the right direction.

Thanks,

ab

You can use virtualbox, vmware or qemu. They are all free to download. I particularly like vmware.

You need to register to download it, but it takes only a couple of minutes.

qemu and virtualbox might be in debian repositories. I'm not sure.

If your processor's got the chops for it, Xen might be an option as well. There's a step-by-step for Debian here:

Hmm... After looking more on the Xen website about processor requirements (CPU with either Intel’s Vanderpool (IVT - Intel Virtualization Technology), I'm not feeling encouraged.

Hmmm. I'm not sure either. From what I've heard you can run _modified_ Linux/BSD etc. guests under XEN on any old 686 processor, but unmodified guests need a recent Pentium or AMD chip.

To find out, I'd install the XEN kernel from the Debian repos (as in the previous link), then see if the XEN subsystem is initialised. Here's another link:
