Windows NT looking more like a Linux Clone
Do you have this feeling that since NT 4.0 up, Microsoft seem to made NT more and more linux alike? With the release of XP, security features and design seem to model after Linux. Except the stablity.

They're taking code from BSD...
Gosh~
They can (because of BSD licence).
Cheap, why dont they just call it:
Windows XP -Built on BSD technology on the startup screen... So they are allowed to rip chunks of code from BSD an put it as windows and sell it together with a nice windows GUI? -NSKL |
Read a BSD license. In short: they can.
You don't understand MS, do you? They can't beat the small guys, they buy them out, and they want to TAKE CREDITS for it. Makes it like they invented it. Unlike Apple, and others.

Windows XP is not built on a BSD core. I haven't saw or heard that anywhere.
I haven't heard that anywhere (do you think they will tell all over the world they steal "their" new products? but everyone know they do), BUT I still believe M$ are fu***ng thieves and they get most of their new tools from *nix open code. Some feature in Win Nt are just like *nix (like the mouse in prompt mode, all feature around command script, "hosts" files you can now use but that was laying useless in win 9x version...). They take the best from open source and call themselve genious. But still I think the biggest problem with windoze is that Windoze is HEAVY. To run Xp, you need a DAMN MONSTER. Ms try to sell Xp as a server OS but you need a so big computer... and still I can do the same thing with my P300. No one need all these prety prety design and tons of default-opened-can't-be-closed service is just a SECURITY HOLE, like windoze is, in fact.
About BSD licence... When you accept to be "open source" you permit everyone to get your code, even your worst ennemy. If you write something good, you accept to see someone to write something better (or different) with your code. But still... think the good work people can do with all *nix clone today will help to increase knowledge and technology of all the world. This is the real goal of open source (I think)... even if it's bad to see whining bitch like M$ doing this. |
MS is not messing with GPL (even though they are pulling their hair out to get rid of it), BSD license is not GPL. GPL states that you can include GPL signed code in your code as long as you release your own code under GPL, on the other hand, BSD license states that you can include BSD signed code in your own code as long as BSD license notice appears in your license, it doesn't say you must release your code under BSD license. But regarding MS, I haven't seen BSD license included in UALA, even though they ripped off TCP/IP stack from BSD. You can make it a closed source because BSD license doesn't impose that your code must be open-source.
Hi guys, not that i'm a big fan of m$, but is there any actual proof that they are "stealing" BSD code ? For the record, I hate m$ as much as you people do, but I would still like to see some hard evidence
