Windows Media 9

Hi there,

I am wondering if there is a codec for either xine or mplayer that will allow me to play WIndows Media Player 9 (or above) files? Currently if I have an old media file it plays fine, but currently a lot of files I get from news groups are version 9 and I can't play them.

Thanks

w32codecs is likely what you need.

Well, I downloaded them and still no luck. I guess that the people at Micro$oft feel that you should have to pay for this, I saw an article on another website saying it is part of Turbolinux's package. I'd rather not pay if all possible. And there's no guarantee that would work either.

ANYONE ELSE? Thanks.

The codecs works fine for me. What multimedia application are you using and where did you install them?

The codecs work fine for me, too, except for .wmv version 9 files. I can hear the sound fine, but the video is black. This is using Kaffeine/mplayer.

Is this your situation?

Did you install the codecs from the mplayer site or from Mandrake/PLF. Try the ones from mplayers homepage if you installed the PLF ones.

I installed them from PLF and tried to goto the ones from the mplayer sit e. I downloaded them but I really don't know where to install them. Actually I was mostly using XINE for my viewing mostly. Everytime I try mplayer it doesn't work too well.

The codecs should go in /usr/lib/win32, I believe.

Well, I get an error message trying to copy files to that folder, it says I don't have authority to copy files to that particular folder.

All you need to do is untar the archive, cange into the extracted directory, switch to root using "su" then copy them to /usr/lib/win32 eg.

Code:
$tar -xjvf filename.tar.bz2
$cd filename
$su
#cp * /usr/lib/win32/.

Well, I did that and now I can view them through mplayer...I just gave up on trying to have them load through xine though. Thanks!
