Windows/Linux install issue
I have an issue... i want to instal Xandros Desktop 4 and to have Windows on the same hdd. The problem is that i dont want to have any trouble if i delete the ext2 partition...what should i do ? I delete windows and instal first the Xandros...then instal Windows? Because i want in the end if i dont want to have linux anymore just to delete the partition without haveing any trouble...like fdisk /mbr solution...

The only easy way to make a multi-boot work is to have Widows installed first, and then install Linux after. The reason for this is that Linux will install grub that can boot Windows or Linux, but if you install Windows after Linux, Windows will use it's boot-loader that does not understand Linux.
In order for Linux to work you will need at least a / partition, a /boot partition, and a swap partition. If you delete these three partitions, then your computer will complain about boot-loader problems when you try to start it. In order to fix these, you put in the Windows XP installer CD, and choose "Repair MBR" from one of the assorted menu's. This will re-install the Windows boot-loader. If someone knows of an better way, I would love to know about it (although I got rid of the Windows partition on my computer about a year and a half ago, and have no intentions of using Windows again) |
To remove GRUB, boot from WindowsXP CD, choose repair option and on dos prompt cd into c:\ drive. There execute following
c:\>fixboot c: c:\>fixmbr c:\>bootcfg /rebuild |
well...i had long time ago mandriva installed and windows...i erase the ext2 partition...then after reboot befor to enter to windows started to apear some ASCII characteres...then entered to windows....on the next restart of the computer on the screen apeared only numbers...like a matrix...404040404040404...and so on...if i entered the WinXp Bootable CD and restart again it said to "Remove any media then reboot the computer"...(windows was the first that was installed then i installed mandriva). :( so i needed to erase the mbr. (and another question...if i do from windows an Ext2 partition to install Xandros it will be enough? i mean...he will se the Ext2 partition, right?)

still M$, learning Linux fast, trial various distros, need WiFi initial FULL install
chad, TY for GOOD info. I am still migrating, want to be Windoz free before Vista public. Still looking for good distro DVE on LT, most lack WiFi support thus I can not update! I have been unable to new/fresh install XPpro after any Linux is on HD, heard ProSP2 might install though.

I place swap as the 2nd P part, size=2x RAM (Old juju?), FC5 default Swap=RAM, but Mandriva was 2x! What U recommend currently btwn distros & my HW? My P part is boot normally~504 MB (or ~2.+ GB if also using as the page file on front of HD!) Still trying to share Page btwn XP & Vista! Quote:
Just finished a FULL reinstall this AM. Only partitions used; swap, / & /home as ext3, ( /tmp ext2, & =size part `Physical Volume LVM') (resvd some space / other Linux Distro) The only parts XP recognizes are the ext2 & LVM (which is RAW). Swap, ext3 are Unknown part. My reading in here I think suggestion was Full, not just the defaults for a newbie, that way all the stuff would be there, even if not needed! I now wish FULL INSTALL was a mark box option vs having to select all the optional components. Quote:
On reboot you should see Windows splash screen. The steps are not hard, fairly straight forward as spelled out, as It worked on my LT! I think Linux will be Very Good once I understand Programming better and find good books. Check out tag newdualbootXP for links by btmiller! *!SN68 will try your 3 steps next time. I do not recall or see in my notes of using 1st or 3rd steps this AM. I stayed :>Windows & it worked! !* |
okay thank you...this was helping...i know what to do...but i need a second opinion...i have my doubts regarding my linux "experience". in windows i know how to work...but linux is something new for me...and i want to know it...not good...but VERY good...i want to study it...but first i wanted to install it on my pc...i have read tones of info on the internet and books...but evry article was in contradiction with another...and i was confused regarding some stuff... know i basicly know what to do to get started...thanks.

EDIT: and on older Windows versions simply run fdisk /mbr which should do the same. |
partitions
the easiest way to work with Linux is to first try to run something like Fedora Core. It's easy to install after windows, it will do all the work for you actually, but you have a very good OS to learn the inner ways of Linux. If you want to program or anything or just play Windows games using wine, use Fedora Core. In my humble opinion it has the easiest way to install files etc.
greetings, Reyn (I hope your something with this post) |
i used a virtual computer to install linux...but is not the same...i works real hard...i wanted to instal xandros because i saw that is for noobs like me...xandros desktop 4....i mean...so...what would you recommend me ? i mean...i dont want to be a...a user that uses fedora core like windows...i mean that he will do anything for me very simple..because i would not learn....i want something to let me configure...and to be frendly...to let me make choices... then...when i`m going to be ready i want to use SunOS or slakware... (btw...sry if my english is not to good...it is not my...first language).

Fedora core
You can do a lot with Fedora Core and it's user friendly too. If you have a problem you can ask it here. But don't look for too easy stuff either because you would't learn a thing then. Sorry if you think this is rude but when you don't want to learn stick with Windows. Linux is pretty fascinating if you want to learn and try different distro's. Don't say now I want to use this or that because your opinion will change when you are using different distributions. Just try one out for a moment and if you don't like it, try another one.
Wanting to learn is the first step. Not everything will be one a plate right before your nose. I know this may sound kind of hard but try these distro's and then deside: Ubuntu kubuntu Fedora Core Mandriva Gentoo Knoppix (runs from a cd without install --> linux lingo --> live cd) slackware These are user friendly distro's. Try them and then deside if you still want to use slackware The only way to learn is to try, try and try. You are on the right track by wanting to begin with Linux. Keep on learning |
man...belive me...if i knew a little bit of linux...windows would have been vanished...long time ago...
hmmm...accidentaly i have knopix...but when i use iti it "said" to me that it is for linux repair...and some other things like this...i read so on the network...i`m gettin` dizzy :) |
download
Try to download a newer version of Knoppix then or try some other Distro i've listed before (btw you can get ubuntu and kubuntu cd's for free)
|
i have knoppix 5.0.1...
And i have Xandros Desktop 4...and 4 cd`s of the mandriva 10 beta1 (but i dont usualy use a beta software...) (oh...and another thing...if what kind of ubuntu ? desktop? server...etc?) |
mandriva
I have mandriva full dvd.
I can make an iso of it and will put it somewhere on an ftp server but don't know one that can manage that much amount of space. If you know one let me know then I will make a mandriva image for you. greetings, reyn |
