windows like switch user in FC3


Hi,

I use FC3 and I want to switch between 2 users in X. I don't want to run one of them as a local VNC server. I'm looking for something similar to the "Switch user" function in Windows XP. I remember seeing support for something similar in Mandrake 8 (not sure - was loooong back). But it was limited in the fact that the second user had to logout for the first user to get access to X. It was more like a stack. At the minimum I would like to do what Mandrake supported, but a true switch user functionality would be better. If you know how to do this, please help me out.

You can use gdm to log in another user in a nested window. Basically you will have two users logged into the same display at the same time and you can swap between the two without logging out.

I don't have much experience with Gnome and GDM, but here's a page I threw together a while ago for how to do this with KDE and KDM. Ironically, I got the basis for the page from a Red Hat developer page (it's cited so you can look there too):
