the xp install CD has an option to repair (hit 'R' when it asks what you want to do). The you have a console. type fixmbr something as previously stated.
The xp install CD can come handy in other occasions.

I got a spare Windows XP Media Center CD, and fixed the problem with the recovery console. Thank you everyone for your help!

My favorite (and others too, I see) is fdisk /mbr ,but I also keep a copy of the Ultimate Boot CD handy, just in case.
